Antibiotics are powerful medicines that fight bacterial infections Used properly, antibiotics can save lives. They either kill bacteria or keep them from reproducing. The horse body's natural defenses can usually take it from there.
Antibiotics do not fight infections caused by viruses, such as: colds, flu, coughs and bronchitis, sore throats, wounds, bacterial infections following i.a. injections. Equine veterinarians should prescribe antibiotics conservatively, and horse owners should support this approach.
Commonly prescribed drugs are sulfamethox-azole, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMS), gentamicin, tetracycline, amikacin, ampho-tericin, dihydrostreptomicin, itraconozole, metronidazole, tetracycline and penicillin.
Penicillin is an antibiotic with activity primarily against certain classes of gram-positive bacteria. Penicillin is indicated in the treatment of infections caused by organisms sensitive to this drug. These include "strangles" and a wide variety of skin, soft tissue, and urinary tract infections caused by many species of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species, as well as other forms of bacteria. Common brands are: Procaine Penicillin, Benzathine Penicillin, Benza-Penc, Ambi-Pen, Crystiben, Durapen, Aquacillin, Crysticillin 300 A.S, Pen-Aqueous, Penicillin G Procaine, Sterile Procaine Penicillin G, Potassium Penicillin.
Gentamicin is a member of the family of antibiotics called amimoglycosides. Aminoglycoside antibiotics are useful for the treatment of gram negative bacterial and Staphylococcus infections. Due to efficacy and cost they are frequently the first antibiotic choice where gram negative infections are suspected.
Tribrissen is a brand containing trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Trimethoprim and sulfa are potent antibiotics. The combination is used to treat susceptible bacterial and protozoal infections in multiple species.
