Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs impair the inflammatory process by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase. Cyclooxygenase converts arachidonic acid, into molecules called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins causes inflammation and fever. The prostaglandins are involved with soreness in muscles that develop after hard work, the swelling associated with injuries like bowed tendons, and fever in a horse with influenza. In horses with degenerative joint disease, prostaglandins contribute to the chronic inflammatory responses of joint effusiusion - fluid escape and pain that result in a shortened stride or limp. Some common NSAIDs used in horses are: phenylbutazone, flunixin meglumine(Banamine). aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, naproxen, CU Algesic and dipyrone. aceclofenac, acemetacin, celecoxib, dexibuprofen, dexketoprofen, diclofenac, diflunisal, etodolac, etoricoxib, fenbrufen, fenoprofen, flurbiprofen, ibuprofen, indomethacin, lumiracoxib, ketoprofen, mefanamic acid, meloxicam, nabumetone, naproxen, piroxicam, sulindac, tenoxicam, and tiaprofenic acid. The action common to all drugs in this pharmacologic group is cyclooxygenase inhibition.
